Charitie Lees Smith (1841-1923) wrote the compelling lyrics to this hymn. Music historians date the first publication date back to around 1863. These powerful lyrics describe our Savior who is ever pleading for us “before God’s throne.”
Hebrews 7:25 “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
Isaiah 49:16 “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.”

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart
